I 'm Still Here Review

I 'm Still Here commences with Genus Phoenix pacing and grumbling to his brother in law, Casey Affleck, about how he's been trameled by characterisation and caught up in a fallacious vocation ; short thenceforth, he declares to the mechanical press that he's through with playing. From at that place, he drops his time smoke pot, tempo around a serial of unkempt flats (and growing more and more unkempt himself), and ranging or yelling at his quakers and supporters. He creates dreadful rap and does it in a hopped up mumble, and chases after Sean "P. Diddy" Combs to make his launching album. (Assuming Combs isn't in on the gag, he comes across better than anyone else in the motion picture show, given his earnest candour in the side of Genus Phoenix's temperamental, needy behaviour.) The setting adds several layers to Phoenix's disastrously awkward 2009 visual aspect on David Letterman -- Phoenix appears less vacant, and more essaying to get his bearings in the Wake Island of unrelenting unexpected travesty, but the commutation besides finds more like a contrived comedy bit. Stock still, the consequence, where he cries in a brushwood, sobbing that he's going to be a jest always, is tormenting.





Fraudulence or no -- and within the picture show, Genus Phoenix opposes with immense defeat to the thought that peoples are caring for his liveliness as a joke -- there's an immersive, formidable fascination to I 'm Still Here, which has a once-respected thespian moving like a peevish, thwarted minor (albeit one who huffs Coca Cola with whores) privately, then being pulled to handle with the outside world, and floundering with confusedness at the gulf between his self-image and his public effigy. Affleck's gritty DV photographic cameras mill about on some strokes , ofttimes pursuing Genus Phoenix from slow, that it feels like he's examining to make over Gerry by means of The Blair Witch Project, but it besides feels like he's assaying to carried through Genus Phoenix and determine the Sojourner Truth. Which may not be on show anyplace here. If this is a documentary film, it's a deeply unenviable one, in which Affleck has exhibited Phoenix's person and ascertained it shallow and discredited. If it's a mockumentary, though, its greatest value is in pointing out the media's credulousness, and prompting audiences that yet in an historic period of limited concealment, they stock still have to query what they 're told and still what they witness themselves.
