Will Bob Baffert Claim a Fourth Derby Title in Kentucky Derby 2011?

Calvin Borel can win an unprecedented third consecutive Kentucky Derby today at Churchill Downs, but another giant of the sport can steal a piece of history today with a win.

Bob Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby three times, in 1997, 1998, and 2002. It’s been a long draught since then, but he’ll be back in the mix today with Midnight Interlude, a 12-1 favorite.

Should Midnight Interlude and his jockey, Victor Espinoza (who was atop Baffert’s last Derby winner, War Emblem, in 2002) emerge victorious today, Baffert become just the fourth trainer (and the second in the last 50 years) to claim the Derby at least four times.

A win for Baffert, would tie him with Herbert J. Thompson (1921, 1926, 1932, 1933) and D. Wayne Lukas (1988, 1995, 1996, 1990), who are all still chasing the legendary Ben A. Jones, who won the Derby six times, in 1938, 1941, 1944, 1948, 1949, and 1952.
